Training your dog is essential to its happiness. When your dog is well-trained, both of you will fully understand what behaviors are acceptable. Training your dog makes life less stressful as you will be able to leave him alone and know he will behave well with visitors or in public. Though it might seem like a difficult task, you and your dog will have many rewarding times together, sharing the tricks and companionship that you’ve come to know through the puppy training sessions.
When crate training your new puppy or dog, there are a few tricks you can apply. If your puppy doesn’t like being in his crate, put a dog treat or chew bone in it and close the door to keep him out. Temptation wins with this exercise; your dog will be eager to enter the crate when a treat is waiting for him. After they have entered the crate, be sure to give them praise so they understand that they have done a good thing.
Regulate your dog’s feeding time if you want to regulate his “potty” times too. If you feed your dog at the same periods of the day, he will have regular bathroom habits. This will get your dog into a solid routine for bathroom breaks.
If you plan to incorporate a crate in dog training, choose one that corresponds to the size of your dog. Keep in mind that puppies get bigger. Choose a crate that your puppy can grow in, but won’t grow out of. There should be enough space to move around without feeling cramped.
Mastering the “leave it” directive is an excellent starting point for your training sessions. This command instructs the dog to release an object and then retreat from it. Teaching them to “leave it” will stop them from destructive chewing and coming in contact with something that could potentially hurt them.
When training your dog make sure you always get his attention in the same manner. When calling your dog, use their name every time. Secure the dog’s attention and then state what you wish him to do. Dogs that are properly trained will respond when their name is said.
Your dog needs to understand that ‘no’ means they need to stop what they are doing right away. You need to look for positive ways to reinforce your commands when you train your dog. When you say ‘no’, your dog isn’t understanding how it should respond to you. Make sure that your training regimen is unique to your specific dog.
Training Sessions
Over-training your puppy will expose it to too much at once, rendering the training less effective. Puppies have short attention spans and don’t focus well, so make sure to keep your training sessions short, but as positive as you can. If you try to teach too much, he won’t like the training sessions and won’t remember everything. This will only frustrate you over time.
One tip to keep in mind when training your dog is to be sure that you introduce it to social environments early and frequently. It is essential that your dog understands how to conduct himself when he is around other animals and people outside the family. It will help your dog adjust to new environments better, also.
Know about what kind of grooming your dog may need. Certain breeds may require lots of weekly grooming; however, others may need very little or no grooming. Properly grooming your dog is important to keep them content and healthy.
When you begin training your dog, do not give him a treat or reward just to make him stop misbehaving. This will teach your pet that it could do whatever it is that it wants and that it has control over you. For instance, do not give treats to the dog when it barks.
One of the first commands your dog should learn is “down.” You can use this in emergencies, but also as a stepping stone to many other training skills. A dog that knows his “down” command well can drop to the ground at a moment’s notice in a testy situation, making it a great command to keep on hand for safety’s sake.
You can’t stop your dog from being a dog, so make sure to give him proper ways to act like a dog. Make sure your dog is properly fed, given a comfortable corner or bed to sleep and has a good place to run and be active.
As you train your dog, consistency is vital. You have to use the same words, tone of voice, reward system and do your training in the environment in which the commands will be given normally to ensure the dog picks up what you’re trying to teach it.
Don’t let dogs bark due to boredom. If your dog barks out of boredom, you can’t blame the dog, only yourself. Boredom barking is often rooted in a lack of constructive ways to blow off steam or seek stimulation. Take some time and play with him, or take him for regular walks. Also, provide chew toys and maybe leave the TV on when you aren’t home.
Bad Behavior
When you are training your dog, bad behavior needs to be discouraged. Correct your dog in a firm tone of voice. Avoid yelling at your dog, and absolutely never strike him or her, either with your hand or any object, such as a rolled up newspaper. Remember to discourage bad behavior when you see it happening. Dogs don’t remember things for a long time. If you don’t correct the behavior immediately after it happens, your dog will not understand what you are doing.
Every relationship has ground rules, and the act of canine training establishes those ground rules with your dog. This makes it less likely that you and your dog will have issues later. Continue to reinforce all learned behaviors. Constantly review what you have taught him and correct any issues. Once your dog is trained properly, your dog can do so much more.
